All week Image Comics has been posting teasers on social media for a new post-apocalyptic series. Today the publisher revealed their hand with the announcement of What’s The Furthest Place From Here?, a new ongoing series from writer Matthew Rosenberg, artist Tyler Boss, and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.
Here’s how Image describes What’s The Furthest Place From Here?:
The world has ended. Now all that remains are gangs of children living among the ruins. But Sid believes there must be something more out there. When she disappears into the wastelands her gang will risk everything to bring her home. A story about the things that matter most- Your survival, your loved ones, and your record collection.
What’s The Furthest Place From Here? was actually announced by Rosenberg, Boss, and Image way back in the halcyon pre-pandemic days of 2018, as the follow-up to Rosenberg and Boss’s 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank from Black Mask. The title is the first Image Comics series for either of the creators, and the latest of many for Otsmane-Elhaou.
The first issue of the series will clock in at a whopping 60 pages, and playing up the music angle of the series, each issue of What’s The Furthest Place From Here? will come in both a standard edition and a direct market-exclusive limited edition, which will include a 7-inch vinyl single featuring new music from a number of musicians and bands. Image says the first issue’s single will include “all-new music from Blake Schwarzenbach of Jawbreaker and Jets to Brazil, and Joyce Manor.”
In a new installment of his newsletter (which is a Substack, but it’s free), Rosenberg spoke a little about the development of the series:
Tyler and I are really excited about this book. It’s been a long time in the making and we’re trying to make it something really special. We’re really pushing ourselves to try new things, challenge ourselves and each other in every way, but still makes something that feels uniquely “us” for lack of a better term. We’re flexing every creative muscle we have. Some of them are sore, but thats what happens when you always hit the gym to work on your arms but somehow manage to always skip brain day.
I’ve not read 4 Kids yet, but I did order it after reading Tyler Boss’s absolutely stellar Dead Dog’s Bite miniseries, and Rosenberg has been doing great stuff for DC lately in the Bat-office, so the promise of more new work from both of them is definitely welcome.
