As mentioned in the Tweet, today is star Simu Liu’s birthday, and he’s just as happy as the rest of us to be surprised with the teaser:

Shang-Chi had been scheduled for release on July 9th, 2021, but that release date has now fallen to Black Widow. Although filming for Shang-Chi, which took place in Australia and San Francisco, was delayed in March 2020 by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, production resumed in August 2020 before concluding in October 2020.
Shang-Chi is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay by David Callaham. In addition to Liu, the cast includes Awkwafina (who recently appeared in Raya and the Last Dragon) as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy. Plus, Michelle Yeoh will appear as Jiang Nan, which is a return to the MCU for the actor, who previously portrayed Aleta Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2. Yeoh’s wider acting resume includes the show-stopping role(s) of Philippa Georgiou on Star Trek: Discovery.
The cast also includes
Tony Leung, who will play Wenwu, also known as The Mandarin, Shang-Chi’s father and the leader of the Ten Rings. The character is a departure from the previous appearance of “the Mandarin” in the MCU, in
Iron Man 3 (2013). That incarnation of the character was revealed to be Trevor Slattery (
Ben Kingsley), an actor who was hired by Aldrich Killian (
Guy Pearce) to distract from A.I.M.’s machinations.
However, in the 2014 short “All Hail the King,” we see Slattery incarcerated in Seagate Prison… where it is revealed that there is an actual Mandarin somewhere in the wider MCU. In September, we’ll finally get a chance to see him on the big screen!
