A Year of Free Comics: GREAT GATSBY: AMONG THE ASH HEAPS AND MILLIONAIRES

In Great Gatsby: Among the Ash Heaps and Millionaires by Vincent Cecil, you can step in to a beautifully realized comic adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, The Great Gatsby.

Now this is a party!

Like the novel, the comic is set in 1920s New York, and the story follows Nick Carraway, who becomes entangled in the tale of millionaire Gatsby and the object of his affection, Daisy Buchanan… to say nothing of the problems that Carraway finds himself in thanks to Jordan Baker.

Jordan Baker.

But while Gatsby may be famous for throwing the kind of soiree that you’d still be talking about a century later (case in point), there is something sinister floating beneath (or maybe just on) the surface of the millionaire’s pristine American dream.

There is plenty to enjoy in this adaptation, from the incredible settings to the amazing outfits – not to mention the extremely appetizing food.

EVERYONE knows Gatsby.

One of my very favorite things about the comic is the presentation, which delivers the scrolling panels upon an art deco frame. Is this presentation simply artifice? Maybe – but ask anyone who’s familiar with the tale of James Gatz Jay Gatsby: nothing could be more appropriate than artifice for an adaptation of Fitzgerald’s seminal Jazz Age novel.

Look at the Art Deco frame… LOOK AT IT!
